OND ELDR. BREATHE FIRE.
Raised to be a warrior, seventeen-year-old Eelyn fights alongside her Aska clansmen in an ancient rivalry against the Riki clan. Her life is brutal but simple: fight and survive. Until the day she sees the impossible on the battlefield—her brother, fighting with the enemy—the brother she watched die five years ago.
Faced with her brother’s betrayal, she must survive the winter in the mountains with the Riki, in a village where every neighbor is an enemy, every battle scar possibly one she delivered. But when the Riki village is raided by a ruthless clan thought to be a legend, Eelyn is even more desperate to get back to her beloved family.
She is given no choice but to trust Fiske, her brother’s friend, who sees her as a threat. They must do the impossible: unite the clans to fight together, or risk being slaughtered one by one. Driven by a love for her clan and her growing love for Fiske, Eelyn must confront her own definition of loyalty and family while daring to put her faith in the people she’s spent her life hating.
I received an e-ARC copy via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I’m totally picking up Adrienne Young’s next book. This book is full of adventures, vikings, fights and characters that you will fall in love with. I wasn’t drawn to this book until I requested it on NetGalley. And I don’t regret this decision. This book was a strong debut with interesting plot, characters who are not flat and much more.
Sky in the Deep follows two clans which are rivals. Main character Eelyn lives with one of the clans. She is captured by the other clan. Eelyn must learn to survive with people that are her enemies. She meets her brother Iri who died 5 years ago but apparently he is alive and healthy. All the novel Eelyn doesn’t know where her loyalties lie. And it is actually understandable.
Personally i loved Eelyn. She is a great example of strong, brave female character. I loved that she was loyal to her family, her clan. Loyalty is probably the main topic in this book. It is talked a lot in this book and we see how Eelyn struggles to understand who she is loyal to.
This book was mostly fast paced. It showed lives of vikings and you can see that the author did her research. I wasn’t a big fan of vikings before reading this novel but I may watch the TV show now. This story was original. I couldn’t put it down.
Another thing that I loved in this novel was romance. It wasn’t dragging the story. It just exist in the back ground and I think it was the right decision. Because this book isn’t about romance. It is about family, friends, loss, loyalty, love. This book in my opinion is good and I’m it will be popular when it comes out. For me it was a lot of fighting which I’m not a fan of. But on the other hand author wanted to show what characteristics these people had, how they lived. And I understand that fighting were important part of Viking’s lives.
This is a strong debut novel which I’m highly recommend to read if you like Vikings or just want to read a book that will keep you at the edge of your seat.
